Across five seasons, History’s The Universe has investigated and covered the depths of the galaxies, in an attempt to uncover some of the mysteries of space. Granted, this is a pretty overwhelming task it’s set itself, and what you get across the 63 episodes bundled into this set only begins to scratch the proverbial service. But there’s nonetheless an awful lot of compelling material to wade through, even if the standard is a little variable at times.
There’s a real advantage to seeing material such as this via a Blu-ray, too. The Universe utilises footage gleamed from NASA, marrying it up to computer graphics, and many of the visuals it presents are quite stunning to behold. It’s here where The Universe is at its best, delving us into space and exploring what’s out there, and presenting jaw-dropping imagery.
There’s a strong educational side to The Universe, although it’s not up to the same level as something like Professor Brian Cox’s Wonders Of The Universe. Cox’s work is a little more concentrated and better explained, certainly. However, The Universe is still a very good documentary series, which balances its resources and covers a lot of ground.
This set, which brings together five series of the show, also comes with a companion book, and the discs themselves don’t skimp on extra features, either. There’s nothing massively compelling about the supplements, though, and it’s the high definition transfer that’s the specific selling point of the Blu-ray presentation.
You certainly get much for your money here, and as an educational set to dip in and out of, The Universe is both good value, and engaging to watch. And there’s no shortage of fascinating material to be gleamed from it. --Jon Foster
